On Saturday, as I was sitting in a coffee shop with friends, my editor called to tell me that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) had been shot at a constituent event.
The news shook me. It’s so uncommon to hear news such as this, when a member of Congress has their life threatened by a gunman. I rushed to the office and made some calls, resulting in a few stories related to activism.
Since Giffords was meeting with constituents when the incident happened, activists expect there to be heightened security at such events going forward and fewer opportunities to meet with lawmakers in informal settings.
The tea parties were particularly sensitive to the news, since critics have already taken to Sarah Palin’s Facebook wall to accuse her and the movement of stoking political tensions that resulted in Saturday’s shooting.
You can read how activists reacted to that here.
